February Golf A Round Up

After a hectic January, February emerged as a month of milestones for Indian golf, marked by significant tournaments, bold announcements, and transformative developments within the sport.

Two major Hero Women’s Professional Golf Tour events were successfully hosted at Oxford Golf Resort and Pune Golf Club. The Oxford event featured a qualifier that saw participation from an all-time high number of professional women golfers—an encouraging indicator of the sport’s expanding footprint among women in India.

At Oxford, Tvesa Malik delivered a stunning performance. Having spent the past few years competing on the Ladies European Tour, she brought both experience and composure to the field. The tournament culminated in a gripping playoff between Tvesa and the talented Anvitha Narender. In a dramatic finish, Tvesa clinched the title with a decisive birdie on the playoff hole. Anvitha, meanwhile, continues to demonstrate remarkable progress over the past two seasons on the Hero Women’s Professional Golf Tour..

The momentum carried into Pune, where Ridhima Dilawari rediscovered top form to secure a commanding six-stroke victory at Pune Golf Club. She finished ahead of seasoned campaigner Vani Kapoor, while amateur Anuradha Chaudhuri impressed with a composed and competitive showing. Importantly, prize money saw a significant boost, with an additional ₹34 lakhs awarded across the two events, taking the total purse to ₹68 lakhs over four tournaments—an encouraging financial surge for women’s professional golf in India.

February also witnessed a landmark announcement from the Indian Golf Premier League (IGPL), which unveiled plans for a USD 100 million, ten-team franchise league set to launch in March 2026. A major highlight is the league’s commitment of USD 250 million toward developing golf infrastructure across the country. The IGPL will host six events in early March, beginning in Chandigarh, before expanding to international venues. This ambitious initiative signals a new era for professional golf in India.

Simultaneously, The 72 League was announced under the banner of the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI). Structured as a six-franchise league, it drew attention for excluding women players. Players as young as fifteen were auctioned to form competitive teams. At the official launch, Kapil Dev, who also serves as President of the PGTI, underscored the importance of financial investment in golf—an encouraging sentiment in a nation where cricket remains the dominant sporting force. Legendary golfer Arjun Atwal was appointed Brand Ambassador for The 72 League, further elevating its stature.

As the month drew to a close, unexpected disturbances in parts of the Middle East and West Asia raised concerns about potential disruptions to golf events in those regions. The global golf community remains hopeful for stability and peace.

February 2026 will be remembered as a month of growth, ambition, and reflection for Indian golf.
