Women’s Golf Association of India Draws Global Attention

As summer settles across India, the women’s golf landscape continues to flourish with renewed energy and growing participation. Longer playing days and an increasingly vibrant tournament calendar have contributed to a surge of activity, reflecting the sport’s rising popularity among women golfers nationwide.

One of the most encouraging developments has been the emergence of multiple women’s golf leagues across the country. These initiatives have expanded playing opportunities, strengthened grassroots participation, and introduced many new players to competitive golf. The momentum is evident in the steady growth of the Women’s Golf Association of India (WGAI), whose membership and player participation continue to rise.

The Hero Women’s Professional Golf Tour remains the cornerstone of professional women’s golf in India. The tour now features players representing more than 20 cities across the country, along with several overseas participants, highlighting its growing stature and international appeal. The increasing depth of talent on the circuit is a positive indicator for the future of Indian women’s golf.

Global attention turned towards Indian golf in May when world media followed the remarkable success of Aaron Rai on the international stage. Equally heartening for Indian golf enthusiasts was the widespread recognition received by his wife, Gaurika Bishnoi, a longstanding and multiple-time winner on the Hero Women’s Professional Golf Tour. The couple’s inspiring journey attracted considerable international coverage and once again showcased the strong connection between Indian golfers and the global game.

Indian professionals also continued to make their presence felt overseas. At the prestigious Lalla Meryem Cup in Morocco, Pranavi Urs and Diksha Dagar produced commendable performances against a strong international field. Diksha further strengthened her season with another impressive showing at the Jabra Ladies Open in Evian, France. Adding to the Indian presence abroad was former WGAI professional Neha Majithia, who officiated as a referee alongside the Ladies European Tour team.

Attention now shifts to the upcoming southern-leg events of the Hero Women’s Professional Golf Tour, which are expected to attract strong fields featuring leading professionals and promising amateurs. With the season entering a crucial phase, competition for positions on the Hero Order of Merit is intensifying.

Indian women golfers continue to gain recognition in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings. More than a dozen Indian players are currently represented in the rankings, led by LPGA star Aditi Ashok. Emerging talents such as Diksha Dagar and Pranavi Urs have also continued to strengthen their international standing through consistent performances on global tours.

Meanwhile, the Indian Golf Premier League (IGPL) has provided an additional platform for players to compete, gain valuable experience, and test their skills on diverse courses. Collaborative efforts between IGPL and WGAI are also exploring innovative opportunities that could further enhance the growth and visibility of women’s golf in India.

The outlook for Indian women’s golf remains exceptionally positive. With expanding participation, stronger competitive pathways, increasing international exposure, and continued support from stakeholders, the game is poised for sustained growth and greater achievements in the years ahead.
